Hi everyone, i have a '95 yj w/ 2.5 and just threw some 31's on it, today i went to my local shop and they said they recommend 4.56 ratio, is this to low? Is this to high? What do you guys think?

4.56 brings it back to "like" stock rpm to speed ratio, most people here would tell you to go 4.88 so i wouldn't say it's too low at all.

I wouldn't change gears for 31's not enough difference from stock to justify the cost, if you need to change gears then go 4.88s you will notice a bigger difference and be set to go up to 33's

I personally wouldn't change gears for 31s. I currently have 31s on mine after coming with 205s stocks and its fine. Still does 70 fine still plenty peppy. I will be going to 4.88s when I put on 35s next month but that's a must have with that big of tire but IMO a waste of time and money for 31s.

I got 4.88's for my 33's and love it.. would even go bigger if my diff's would have allowed it.  building jeeps is very addictive so if you already got 31's on it you probably will end up going bigger tires later.. the only thing 4.88's will hurt you is in mpg's you will love it with your 31's for power and accelerate.. I had put 215's "28's" on mine while I was doing some body work and it was a hot rod it was so quick and wasn't that bad on the highway..

it's never a waste to re-gear to 4.88's not in a underpowered jeep. if you were rocking a 6cld or v8 I would change my opinion a bit if you were doing highway a lot..

Your stock gears are either 4.10 (manual) or 3.73 (auto), so switching to 4.56 isn't much of a change, not worth the expense and trouble.  Go 4.88 and don't look back, especially if you think you will ever go larger (we all do LOL).

Would the 4.88 still work well even if i decide to keep the 31's?
