Airbox Placement confusion
« on: May 25, 2011, 06:31:54 PM »
Hello guys,

been awhile since I have wrote here. Finally have my engine mounted the 88 4.0 and now we have no clue what to do with the airbox.  Just doesn't fit. Do I need to do a cold air intake, what have other people done with this issue.  I put power steering in it where it didn't have it before and took all the room.

I picked up a 4.0 intake setup (stock) for free and put it on my YJ.

I had to drill 2 holes to attach it. Other than that fits like it was made to.

Is it for a wrangler or a cherokee?  Can you give me details on the exact thing I would need to buy?

Pretty sure it's off a 02 TJ. I got everything from the airbox to the TB. It's just the air tube and the airbox really.Mine came with a pretty fresh filter too.  Make sure the clamps are still there.

Also how did you deal with the vacuum?

Whaddya mean? Just make sure the hoses are all hooked up.

My mechanic said the vacuum had to run into the airbox line so figured it was a special but or adapter

Look at mine in the above PIC. There is a line that comes off the valve cover and T's. One goes to the brake booster and one to the air tube. The air tube has a fitting molded in to it. I might have had to buy new tubing but I don't remember. The plastic T is a factory thing. It has always been on.

Scott, if your booster is connected to the air filter tube and the valve cover is not working at all - there is no vacuum there. the booster should go to the intake manifold directly (no Ts or anything like that, so it get's max vacuum). I have no idea how you can stop that Jeep if it goes to the air box tube that goes to the t/b.

I think you're seeing the Evap canister line that connects to the T.  it normally goes to the airbox.

I am sure I am wrong on the brake booster line.  I forgot the evap can is in that corner under the brake booster. Next time I pop the hood I'll take a look.

The line going to the T sure looks like the Evap. line.  It's a hard plastic.

Brake booster goes to the manifold and is rather thick.
