:puzzled: I just got my first jeep and it's bogging down when I'm traveling uphill. Anybody know of a way to help solve this problem without a motor-swap. Jeep engine is completely stock. '94 2.5L--Need help!

Use the search on here, and read the FAQ,lots of info.

There is a lot of good information here. How tight is your budget? You will information on turbo, superchargers, motor builds, intake modifications, gearing or whatever but in the end they all cost something so your budget is a major consideration.

What are you running on it, and is it an automatic or standard? The first two things you can do are get a Ram air or CAI, then exhaust and a throttle body spacer. If you're running a cat then get a straight through muffler like the Dynomax Ultraflow Welded, if not than run a chambered muffler like a flowmaster 50. This will help you pretty noticeably if you're on stock tires, or oversized tires with a regear. Also, as your fluids go bad replace them with higher quality ones like Royal Purple or Redline, except diff fluid, stay with the $4 shit stuff there. But the first and easiest thing you can do is remember you're driving a four cylinder in a brick and that it won't produce any real power until about 2500rpm. So if you're in that shady area (50-60) where you really want to shift into 5th......don't...... wrap it up stay in fourth and hang out around 3k to get up the hill. I promise you it'll sound like ass but it'll take it.

Ya that helps, especially behind semi's saves tons of gas even if you're like 50 feet away. Remember you're plowing through the air in a brick, you're going to hate your life at high speed especially w/ the top down unless you're running itty-bitty-teeny-tiny little tires with $600 worth of power mods'. That's what I'm doing, so if you don't mind being the scariest sounding thing riding on 225's EVAR do that. Otherwise take your time and don't roll your rig trying to go fast and die.

ya I followed a rig on the way home this weekend it gave me minimum 1/4 throttle extra to play with and helped large on hills and at times he would roll up to 20-30km/h faster then I could normally role on upward grades with no one in front of me!!!

;) So true.

p,s i'm running 64mm t/b ported intake with short ram intake and cone filter with header & 2inch is my smallest exhaust point!!
I'm getting ready to put in a piggy back for ecm tuning and probably going with some boost!!
-
Hey Torch, have you ever made a throttle body spacer? I was thinking about making one but i'd kinda like to see if I could get an opinion them. Because I know a spacer would help it's just that $80 is kind of a steep price for such a little mod with only like 3hp gain.

did you try eBay, there are spacers for something like $25

no never did yet
wasn't going to worry about it I don't think it would make much difference if I go with boost anyway

in my experience, dynomax is all garbage. Very loud and weathers quickly.
all the bolt on stuff helps a bit but don't expect to be blown away, no matter what their write ups or ads say.

What do you mean loud? Mine's almost stock sounding and it's stainless steel dude. Just like the magnaflow. Did you get the bullet? or run a turndown cuz then it'd be crazy loud.

if drafting someone is like tailgating, I'm against it 100%.. it will get you a trip off the road if your behind me, or a taste of your steering wheel when you try to keep from hitting my hitch.. 2.5L motors are not race motors, they do fine or great off road and in town.. going up hills fast isn't their forte.. you could possible seek out a 4.0L Ax15, and the works and fly up that hill a little easier.. and if your interested in doing that, I have the complete set up for you.. was going to do it to my YJ.. decided to buy an older CJ-7 for what I like to do anyway.. so, I have all this stuff in the garage..

Bounty hunter on this forum sells the throttle body and the spacer.

you don't have to be like a trailer close even 1-2 car lengths behind a big rig is all you need mainly cuts the wind for ya.
not to mention I hate the drivers that your coming up on to pass and they slam the breaks on you it's more dangerous then tailgating my my opinion doing it on purpose. usually guys like that have road rage issues and speed and tailgate you afterwords in my experience.. it's like they don't like being passed it's a insult or something :stick:

back when people were taught how to drive, the RULE was 1 car length per 10 mph... now running behind a semi, at probably 65 mph or more equates out to a minimum of 6 1/2 car lengths to be SAFE!... seems each day that passes, drivers get worse! has NOTHING to do with road rage, has to do with I DON'T LIKE HEMORRHOIDS ON MY TAILGATE.. and, if you choose to ride it, you will suffer the consequence.. so.. go ahead and neglect your safety.. I don't suppose you TEXT also? That PISSES me off too.. Common sense should tell you to drive courteously and live.. stupidity and no value to your life tells you to do stupid things.. you choose!..

listen, you saying your slam your breaks on people because there behind you isn't save!!! or right by any means!!
taking these matters in your own hands is the reason people die on the road.. let the authority's be the judge of that not you..

why don't you try and not use CAPS, on your 3rd post you already give lectures - the discussion was not about tailgating and to be honest i don't care what you like or dislike if you talk like this, be nice at least for 10 posts, goes a long way.

i had the super turbo or something like that dynomax exhaust. No turndown. In my experience it was super loud.. i switched to banks which was a good bit quieter. The worst part of the dynomax was any time i was accelerating over 2500rpms.
Maybe you have a different model then i did?

Ya, that's weird dude, I've never heard of anyone thinking Dynomax is too loud, Superturbo is supposed to sound stock 0_0....I have the Ultraflow and it's straight through and even that is barely as loud as a Flow 50 delta at the loudest and near stock at the quietest. Banks sound pretty wicked too though.

Just chill dude, they effective drafting range of a semi truck is over a hundred feet, no I don't think it's a particularly safe idea to draft 30ft off someones bumper at 80mph. I don't do that. However, i hope for YOUR safety you don't slam your brakes on tailgater trying to scare them :finger: you think a tailgate "hemorrhoid" (what does that mean?) sucks, imagine how your tailgate would feel after stuffing a 4000 pound jeep into it.

not bad since my truck is over 10,000 pounds.. but that aside, lets get to something not mentioned.. the two most dangerous places on the hiway or freeway to drive are:
1. directly along side a semi.. (you'll see people pull up like their passing, then slow down along side for a long time... bad news) if that semi blows a tire, it WILL blow that car off the road!.. those tires go like dynamite!..
2. at the rear of that semi, when it blows a tire, have you seen the tire rubble left from a blow out? not little pieces of tire, but huge hunks that will destroy your jeep, and most likely put you in the ditch.. whether right side up, rolling, or what have you.. its not a good idea to draft a semi.. I don't even like being 8 car lengths behind one.. those tire chunks come at you real fast..
oh, and in one of the posts I just looked at, there was a 2.5L all built up from the looks of it.. she was asking if anyone knew anything about who's it was? anyway, looked like a nice build for a 2.5L.. if I were keeping my little 4, I'd probably go for something like that.. I've used turbo chargers in the past on my CJ-5 w/401 AMX HiPo motor.. nice for Colorado going over those mtns to get somewhere. Always wanted to try a super charger.. maybe one of these days..

I run a cherry bomb vortex muffler it's not quite strait through design it does have a deflector in it. I like the sound of it though.. it's louder then stock but at low rpms isn't to bad.. also never been pulled over for it yet..
you can hear it on my drift vid I had I'm fairly hard in to the throttle for that run

I had a dynomax cat-bank a while back for about three years and i thought the thing was too loud myself. Think it was a super-turbo and I know it was only about $150 and shipping new. I've seen the comments of people saying the thing sounds stock, so I'm still wondering about that.

Ok I have read what gets more HP out of the 4banger but has anyone tried using a chip? Do they work? I was thinking about getting one for my YJ but want to know if it will give it more HP like the ads say. Thanks BJStirm

there is no "chip" available for YJ
EDIT: don't try and buy anything off ebay that says that, they are just scams.

Thanks for the info. I didn't look on ebay I went to http://www.gfchips.com/jeepwrangler.aspx and the site said that it works for wranglers and gives them 60hp and more gas mileage. So Boring the motor and adding a supercharger are probably the best ways?

60HP :roflol:
this is what they say on the site you posted
EASY INSTALLATION. Installation can be performed by anyone using simple hand tools. The GF module installs into your JEEP WRANGLER's engine bay and is connected via 2 wires that plug into the IAT sensor. Diagrams are included. The unit is then able to reprogram the ECU thus improving your car's performance. Everything needed for installation is included in this kit for a quick and easy installation that shouldn't take more than 15 minutes. There is absolutley nothing else needed to have this installed on your vehicle.
what that does is modifying the reading on the intake air temperature sensor, total parts cost about $3, they sell it for $69. Like i said, there is no chip fo YJ
A "chip" is an integrated circuit component, in the case of an ECU it's name comes from early electronic injection computers on which you could replace the memory chip or PROM/EPROM/EEPROM which stands for programmable read only memory, you cannot do that on the YJ PCM. Some of the later ECUs had the ability to be reprogrammed, some were locked from factory in which case you would add an inline microcontroller that would modify engine reading parameters to alter advance and afr curve, switch the PCM/ECU in open loop sooner and so on.
Also, ignore anything that says electric supercharger (big scam as well).

or one of these!! I'm hopping to have mine installed this summer

Ive got the dynomax straight through super turbo cat back, and It was loud from day one.I guess you could say the most annoying drone sounding exhaust I have ever owned. Now this is with the hard top on, I havent driven with the top off since I installed it last year.it does sound good at idle and after 3200 rpms but in between I dont care for it,maybe im gettin old
