I was looking through jeepforum and came across an interesting idea on how to make a cowl intake. Has anyone else done this to their jeep??

that looks like a great mod... to bad i have a yj and don't think it has that much room behind the firewall... is it really that easy to get the cowl off a yj also?
1990 YJ 4cly, ax5, 2.5 inch BDS lift, 31 MTr\'s,  Powertrax-lockers all around, track-bars removed, boomerang shackles, warn m8000 winch, electric fan. [sold but not forgotten]

I like the idea except for one thing.  If you do water crossings that are deep enough to crest the hood, you could have problems, while under the hood it would be OK.  I kinda like the H1 intake and snorkel that some people have done.  Although this prevents you from lowering the windshield.  Not like that many TJ's do that though.

if you do water crossings that deep with a stock jeep the intake in the cowl will be the least of your problems

the deepest water my jeep has seen was a couple inches deep and mud only 3/4 way up my 35in tire. 4ft deep water isnt something i come across, atleast not here in san antonio. i dont think im going to be driving through a lake anytime soon so i think ill be ok. i think the cowl intake should compliment the 4.0 throttle body pretty nicely and i will be running a pre filter.

Initial launching into water can cause a wave to crest the hood while not drowning the engine.

This possible on a YJ? Never tore down that far, so I don't know what's in there.

The YJ does not have the pocket the TJ's do.  The pocket was made so they could move the wiper motor from behind the dash to under the hood so to speak.

Yup, I plan on doing something similar. I'm looking to change things up a bit as far as the filter goes. I have to remove my cowl and get a good look at things and come up with a plan of action.

i came across another idea were the guy uses the stock air box and routes it to the cowl. he plugged the existing hole from the airhorn thing and cut another. not sure if you would see the same results as an open filter but im sure this way provides better filtering.

By using the existing box, he's giving himself extra insurance that water isn't going to get into the intake.

Yeah, this is along the same lines I was thinking. I like the idea of using the o.e. air box.
