Transmission for my 97 TJ 4 banger
« on: July 01, 2010, 08:59:21 PM »
new here, and glade I found this place

I would like to get a new trans for my 97 TJ, currently I have a 3 speed auto and would love to get a 4 speed auto from a I6
would I have to use a different transfer case or would mine bolt up
or would I have to use an adapter such as I will have to use for the engine to bolt up to the trans?

A 4-speed won't bolt up.  2.5L's and 4.0L's use different bell housing bolt patterns.  The 4-speed found in later TJ's was because they went from the 2.5L to the 2.4L which shares the 4.0L bell housing bolt pattern.

Is there something wrong with yours, or are you looking for an auto with overdrive?
Scott~

it is starting to slip, (I think it is a sensor)
so I dont really wanna repair it i would rather not put money into it as I wont be happy with it anyway
I really want to get a stronger built trans as I kinda make it work harder than most drivers do
and over drive would be a plus, so a higher highway speed with less RPM would be great!

I think they're pretty rare but a Cherokee with a 4cyl and auto should be the sweet AW4 transmission, a 4spd auto with an OD gear.  Google 'AW4 swap" and you will get some good info.

Mid-90s Dakotas ran the 2.5l engine. Many in front of a AX-15 so that is a typical swap for swapping manuals trans. I would think an auto from the same typical truck would also work in the Jeep. Just make sure you get the 4wd model. The output should be the same as your Jeep auto with 23-spline. Only issue I can see that may come up is the depthness of the shaft. Meaning the length of the trans output and the length of the tcase input.

The 4spd auto is longer than the 3 spd the one from the XJ won't fit unless you
move the motor forward or are happy with a 2" driveline in the rear...

The AW4 is becoming quite popular in Wranglers, both in the 4cyl and 6cyl, with sufficient length rear driveshafts.
